How to Prevent Drain Clogs: Simple Tips for Homeowners

We clear blocked drains every week, and the honest truth is that most of them should never have blocked. Drains fail from accumulation — small daily habits adding up over months. Change the habits and the blockage never forms.

In the kitchen

  • Never pour cooking oil or fat down the sink — it solidifies in the pipe and traps everything behind it. Pour it into a container and bin it.
  • Scrape plates before rinsing; rice, coffee grounds and fibrous peels are prime blockage material.
  • Fit a sink strainer — a KSh 200 tool that catches debris before it enters the pipe.
  • Flush with hot (not boiling) water weekly to move grease along before it sets.

In the bathroom

  • Use a drain catcher over the shower waste — hair is the number one cause of shower blockages.
  • Only flush toilet paper. Wet wipes — including ones labelled 'flushable' — do not break down and are a leading cause of sewer blockages.
  • Run taps briefly after shaving or brushing to move residue through.

When prevention is not enough

If a drain is already slow or has blocked more than once, the cause is usually deeper — pipe scale, a partial collapse, or roots in an external line. That is when home remedies stop working and professional equipment is needed. Our drainage team clears blockages properly rather than temporarily. Reach us on +254 723 152553.
